Digg Introduces Genre-Specific ‘Newsrooms’
Digg, the social news Web site, opened a series of online newsrooms Tuesday that will use social networks to determine the importance of a news story.
The new feature, called “Digg Newsrooms,” hopes to create destinations around specific genres and topics online with a wide variety of themes from science and technology to more esoteric genres like Lady Gaga or Windows 8.
Although the content within the newsrooms will be primarily be selected by Digg’s top contributors, the site goes one step beyond its current news ranking method by incorporating outside social networks too. Matt Williams, Digg’s chief executive, said in an interview that the newsroom would monitor the popularity of stories on other social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, in addition to Digg’s users.
