We process about 90 percent of all our information through our eyes, so it is no wonder that we are drawn to images in order to feed our craving. Pinterest is the perfect place to satisfy this visual appetite – It provides a virtual scrapbook that allows you to “visually share, curate, and discover new interests by posting, also known as ‘pinning,’ images or videos” and organize these things you love onto different themed pinboards. And it is incredibly simple to use. You can “pin” images you find online or upload yourself, or can “repin” images that other people have already shared.

The site has exploded in the social world, adding 11 million new members in less than a year. But the true potential here is not the expanding number of users, but the demographics of these individuals. Pinterest is being used predominantly by women between the ages of 25 and 44. This demographic is especially beneficial for non-profits; these are the women and moms who are not only making most of the household buying decisions, but also the ones that do the most giving.

Before he passed away, Steve Jobs made his final goal clear: make Apple the backbone of the consumer cloud. First Apple launched cloud features within Mobile.me. Then it updated cloud-enabled versions of iOS. With the OS X Mountain Lion preview last week, we can finally see how Apple plans to change our world again.Any move by Apple is obviously watched closely by Microsoft. But after digging into Mountain Lion’s features and philosophy, I think Apple’s new operating system poses a threat to another, less obvious, company — the current leader in the consumer cloud, Facebook. Many companies have learned the hard way not to underestimate Apple. For Microsoft and Facebook, now may be the time to make bold moves to ensure their continued relevance in the consumer cloud.

At Distilled’s SearchLove conference in London back in October, Mat Clayton from Mixcloud provided a great snippet of Javascript that could be used to record whether visitors to your site were logged into Facebook or not. This has a few uses, such as customising which social buttons you show your user or just for recording how many of your users are logged in to Facebook and then using this to show your boss that you guys should really be interacting with your visitors there.

Researchers, in a cross-continental effort by the University of New South Wales, Purdue University and the University of Melbourne, have achieved an astonishing feat: the first-ever creation of a working transistor from a single atom. Since 1954, when Texas Instruments scientist, George Teal, created the first silicon transistor, the innovations in creating smaller and smaller transistors have paved the way for the manufacturing of today’s computers and mobile devices. A single device may hold billions of transistors, which work together in concert to perform simple binary calculations. With more transistors packed into a specified area, calculations will become faster and computers will be able to store more information, all the while requiring less power than contemporary transistors.
